Antique Battle Of Verdun Trench Art Inkwell

$695.00

The Battle of Verdun is considered the greatest and lengthiest in world history. Never before or since has there been such a lengthy battle, involving so many men, situated on such a tiny piece of land. The battle, which lasted from February 21st, 1916 until December 19th, 1916 caused over an estimated 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). From a strategic point of view there can be no justification for these atrocious losses. The battle degenerated into a matter of prestige of two nations, Germany and France. This is an exceptional example of Trench Art from the battle of Verdun. This is an original commemorative brass shell casing that was formed into a footed inkwell with a fitted crystal insert. The shell is lettered and numbered at both ends with an intricate chased metal design. There is also a chaste emblem on the front with a design that reads Verdun at the top and bottom. The inkwell also has a footed base. It measures 4 3/8 inches in length and 2 1/2 inches tall by 1 7/8 inches deep. The condition is considered excellent for the age of the piece showing one small dent in the front as seen in photos. This great piece of WWI memorabilia was purchased in Paris in 1958 and has been in private collections. This is a wonderful opportunity to own a piece of military history from a tragic bygone era.
