This is an amazing Circa 1880 French Victorian bronze inkwell. There is a majestic eagle with spread wings about to take flight atop a globe with intricate detail to the bronze casting. It has a claw foot base with acanthus leaf motif. Inscribed across the front of the globe is Europe and on the backside is spelled Amerique and the word ocean with a French L'accent aigu over the e in ocean. The top section lifts off to reveal the inkwell with it's original glass insert with a bronze rim. The insert is removable and two inches tall. This exceptional inkwell measures 9 3/4 inches to the top of the eagle's wing and 8 inches across the wing tips and weighs 6 1/4 pounds and is in excellent condition retaining the original bronze patina. This is a rare and impressive piece which would make a statement on any desk and represents a fine example of French artistry from an elegant bygone era.
