Circa 1860 Antique Enameled Goddess Nike Portrait Pin
This is a beautiful Circa 1860 antique enameled portrait brooch of Nike, the winged Greek goddess of victory. The enameled portrait is set in the shape of a shield and the frame acid tests silver. The portrait is of a victorious woman with long hair. She is wearing a winged crown with laurel wreath. She appears to be wearing a metal tunic in preparation for battle. In Greek Mythology, Nike was the goddess of speed, strength and victory. Also known as Winged Goddess, Nike is most often pictured as having wings. She was the child of Pallas (Titan) and Styx In most beliefs, Styx is the name of the river that separates Planet Earth from the Gates of Hell (Hades). The River Styx was named for Nike’s grandfather Tethys. Nike and her three sisters, Zelus (Zeal/power), Bic(Force) and Kralas (Strength) were brought by Styx to Zeus to assist him in the great TITAN BATTLE whose ultimate goal was to gain control of Mount Olympus. The enameled portrait of Nike shows amazing detail and measures 1 inch by 7/8 inch and is in excellent original condition. This is a very lovely pin from an elegant Victorian bygone era.
