Circa 1900 Elegant Amphora Bust
This is a magnificent porcelain bust made in Turn-Teplitz Bohemia, Austria by Ernst Wahliss. It is Circa 1900 and depicts a beautiful young woman dressed in a large frilly hat in the shape of a crescent moon. Her manner is emboldened by her risqué décolletage and large frilly sleeves of her dress all enhanced with the iridescent glazes typical of the rich finishes often found on Wahliss pieces of this Art Nouveau period. An elegant golden pendant cascades from her neck. She is on a Rococo stand with bas-relief decor. The bust dates from 1897 to 1906. Wahliss purchased this blank from the Alfred Stellmacher Imperial and Royal Porcelain Factory, which was founded in 1859. He purchased the factory in 1894 and continued to use the blanks from this artistically brilliant company. This piece measures 13 1/2 inches tall and 8 1/2 inches across the widest part of her dress. This piece reflects Stellmacher's style with the detailed molding and subtly shaded hues. Wahliss sold his Bohemian pieces in high-end retail stores mainly in London and Vienna. His company was renown for their unique designs and extremely high quality workmanship. This is a very fine example from an elegant bygone era.
