Dated 1878 Wilcox Mechanical Silver Butter Dish

This is an exceptional example of fine Victorian silver plate. It is a beautiful mechanical footed butter dish. The piece is dome shaped in a magnificent handled frame. The dome is engraved with a floral and leaf design and engraved in the center is the date it was given as a gift, Sept. 8, 1878. On the lid of the cover is a figural seated winged cherub. The frame has a footed base with a flared outward leg with a reticulated pattern of open pierced work. The upper frame also has an ornate open pierced design. The bottom of the base is signed Wilcox Silver Plate, Jan. 8, 1878. To operate the butter dish, you push downward on the inner part of the frame which opens the butter dish and to close you push upward and the mechanical top section moves over and closes. The butter dish also has a center band that is heavily decorated with birds and garlands of flowers. The silverplate is in very good condition showing wear only to the interior of the butter dish which is commensurate for the age of the piece. It measures 12 1/2 inches to the top of the handle and 6 1/2 inches at the widest part of the frame. This antique butter dish is in working order showing an old repair to the very top of the inner frame, please refer to photos. This is a remarkable example of fine silver work from an elegant bygone era.
